From developing your skills to building your client list, starting a career as a tradesperson can be an incredibly challenging yet highly rewarding experience.

If you're thinking about joining a trade, it's a good idea to start with the so-called 'easy' jobs before tackling more complex projects. Why, you ask? Well, doing so will help you to expand your skillset and knowledge gradually, meaning you can grow in confidence before the tougher (and higher paying!) jobs come along.

In this blog post, we'll discuss 7 beginner-level jobs (or stepping stones) that'll help you on your way to becoming the top tradesperson in town.

1) Simple plumbing repairs

Plumbing repairs are a great way to gain experience and build your skills. They're also routine tasks that are highly in demand, so you'll never be out of work if you learn the basics of plumbing.

Some simple plumbing repairs that you can tackle include fixing leaks, unclogging drains, and replacing faucets and showerheads.

2) Basic electrical work

Basic electrical work is another excellent way to develop and hone your skills as a tradesperson. While doing these tasks will require you to pass a licensing exam, many of these jobs are fairly easy to do once you are able.

A few examples of basic electrical jobs include changing light fixtures, installing new outlets, and replacing light switches.

3) Carpentry projects

If you want to become a handyperson, why not try your hand at some odd jobs? Carpentry projects are regular odd jobs that'll come up, with customers either lacking the skill, time or tools to complete these tasks themselves.

Some easy carpentry jobs that you can give a go include cutting shelves, repairing fences, trimming blind headrails and building or improving simple decks and patios.

4) Painting and wallpapering

Painting and wallpapering are probably jobs you've done before in your own home, so why not start there in your career? People will pay an average of £400 per room for a fresh lick of paint – not too shabby if you ask us!

However, you'll get more money depending on experience, so start by building your portfolio. Take on any task from wallpapering one wall to an entire room, or painting multiple rooms.

5) Landscaping and gardening

In a country that is so garden proud, you'll never fall short of landscaping or gardening jobs. These can range from simple to complex, many of which you may have likely already had experience at.

Always start with the simple, like mowing the lawn or pruning shrubs, before moving on to the more difficult jobs. Think of it like a video game – you'll always try 'easy mode' before 'difficult' (unless you're really brave).

6) Home cleaning and maintenance

We all clean our homes (unless we pay a cleaner), but some jobs may be more tedious than others. That's where you come in – you'll be doing the jobs they've perhaps been putting off or don't have time to start.

Cleaning and maintenance jobs such as cleaning gutters, power washing and window cleaning are easy jobs that can help you to build experience and improve your skillset, while being a chore to most.

7) Assembling furniture and installing appliances

Another one for the odd-jobbers out there, these are also skills you would have gained in your day-to-day that some people just don't have time for and would be happy to pay someone to do. The perfect stepping stone jobs!

Some examples of easy assembling tasks include putting together tables, cabinets, chairs, or anything with an instruction manual; while plugging in a washing machine could be an example of an easy appliance installing job.

Conclusion

So, if you want to become a successful tradesperson, now you know it doesn't take too much skill to get started! Begin with the jobs you are used to doing at home as a great motivator – like painting and decorating or cleaning windows – since you will be a lot more confident in getting these jobs done well.

Eventually (and especially when working with an experienced professional), you will be able to take on the tougher challenges of installing full kitchens, bathrooms, or building extensions. But you won't get there overnight, so don't be afraid of stepping stones. Everyone started somewhere!

Here's to success and meeting your goals... one step at a time.
