Climbing High: How to Clean Your Roof

Let's be real, even if you're a roofer and are used to getting up high, cleaning your roof is way far down on your list of priorities. In fact, it might not even be on your list at all.
That's because when most of us think of chores, we typically think about what we see inside the house (vacuuming, dusting, cleaning the bathroom...) or the garden. But by doing so, we neglect the exterior parts of the house, including the roof, which can lead to problems over time (mould, mildew and moss, to name a few).
To avoid letting it get that bad, why not get into the habit of cleaning your roof on a regular basis? It doesn't take too long once you know how. And if you don't know how to do it safely, not to worry, as we've written you a step-by-step guide below. | ![]() |
Conquering your fears
First things first, if you're not one for working at a height, know that this may not be the job for you. However, if you're willing to face your fears, all you need is a partner for support and to learn to look down.
Let us clarify. When you're using a ladder, you must always have someone standing at the bottom to hold it sturdy, no matter how stable you think it is. This will prevent a fall and ensure a first aider is on hand in case one does occur (accidents happen, after all). It also means you have someone to motivate you if you feel nervous. This can be anyone you trust, as long as they are an adult and of a similar or stronger weight to you.
What's more, roofs that you are cleaning, especially conservatory roofs, can be made of glass. This means you will often see just how high up you are, so you must be prepared to work without that gut feeling of wanting to get back on the ground, or to 'safety'.
You'll feel more comfortable with ladders the more you use them, so don't be disheartened if you panic at first.
How to clean your roof

Step 1: Prepare Your Tools and Safety Equipment
Now, you've decided to give it a go, so let's move on to cleaning the roof. The first step is to gather all the tools and safety equipment you will be using. This includes a ladder (of course), roofing boots with good traction, a roofing rake, a stiff-bristled brush, a bucket, and a pressure washer with a nozzle. You'll also want to wear gloves to protect your hands from the harsh chemicals you'll be using.
Step 2: Remove Debris
Before you start cleaning your roof, you'll want to remove any debris that has accumulated on it. This includes leaves, branches, and other debris that can clog your gutters and damage your shingles. Use a roofing rake to carefully remove any debris from your roof.
Step 3: Apply Cleaning Solution
Next, you'll need to apply a cleaning solution to your roof. There are several different types of cleaning solutions available, but it's important to choose one that's specifically designed for roofs. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions when applying the cleaning solution.
Step 4: Scrub Your Roof
Once you've applied the cleaning solution, it's time to scrub your roof. Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the entire surface of your roof, paying special attention to areas that are particularly dirty or stained. Be sure to scrub gently to avoid damaging your shingles.
Step 5: Rinse Your Roof
After you've finished scrubbing your roof, it's time to rinse it off. Use a pressure washer with a nozzle to rinse your roof thoroughly, making sure to remove all of the cleaning solution and debris. Be careful not to over-rinse, as this can cause your shingles to become too wet and lead to damage.
Step 6: Inspect Your Roof
Once you've finished cleaning your roof, it's a good idea to inspect it for any signs of damage or wear. Look for missing or cracked shingles, leaks, or other issues that may need to be addressed. If you notice any problems, it's best to contact a professional roofing contractor to have them repaired.

Here's to productivity
Once you've got the hang of things, try to get the roof cleaned as often as you can. Once a year should be enough, but twice a year should halve the job.
Remember, cleaning your roof can be a difficult and dangerous task. It is always recommended to hire professionals, who are trained and equipped to handle the job safely and efficiently if you can't do it yourself. Always be sure to use proper safety equipment and use caution when climbing on your roof if you do.
With the right tools and a little bit of elbow grease, you can keep your roof looking picture-perfect and protect your home from the elements.
