Mothers. They really are the best, aren't they?

From infancy to adulthood, their support often lays the cornerstone of who we become and what career path we take – and that's certainly true for many tradespeople!

Whether it's to support them at college, find them an apprenticeship after school or simply make them cuppas on the job, without them, many would not be where they are today.

As a tribute to the mothers behind the scenes, we spoke to multiple tradespeople for Mother's Day to ask them a series of questions about their mothers, including how they inspired them and the interesting skills they have as individuals that make them so special. Here is what we discovered...

Jacob

Jacob is a carpenter based in Kent, as well as an avid user of Instagram and YouTube, where he shows off his ever-expanding collection of tools. He is known for his woodworking designs, as well as various how-to videos and product reviews.

The influencer fires a mixture of wholesome and comical answers at us as we find out more about the impact his mother has had on his success:

Describe a time when your mum inspired one of your projects?

That was when I was 14 years old and my mum wanted a coat rack in the hallway, so I went in[to] Grandad's workshop and I built it for her.

How has your mum influenced your trade journey?

When I was in college and she bought me a brand new set of chisels.

What is the most interesting skill or hobby your mum has?

Washing dishes is her most interesting hobby.

What is the funniest thing your mum has ever said about your job?

Why do you need so many tools?

if you could collaborate with your mum on a project, what would it be?

I think it'd be... [a] garden room.

What would you like to say to your mum in honour of Mother's Day?

I love you, Mum and I always will! And I just want to say, Happy Mother's Day... and love your mothers.

John

A workshop supervisor for a production company, John specialises in welding, although he works with a crew that are all multi-skilled with their own specialties, with most builders being 'chippies' (carpenters). Gearing up for a project, in his words, his days currently consist of all things 'materials, props, reindeer, set pieces, staging and coffee'.

But he's quick to give one woman the credit for all her support in his career with a short but sweet message:

What would you like to say to your mum in honour of Mother's Day?

Big thank you to mine. [For] always being there, always being happy to support us [in] whatever crazy things [I] end up doing – including working in this weird, weird industry. Happy Mother’s Day, everyone! And thank you to all the mothers out there.

Paul

Carpenter Paul works for a family-run business that has over 20 years of experience in all aspects of carpentry and joinery and prides itself on getting all jobs done to a high standard that provides customer satisfaction.

Answering our questions in a montage of videos, we learn it's his mum and family who motivate him most and give him confidence in his abilities:

What is the most interesting skill or hobby your mum has?

It’s gonna sound strange but my mum is amazing at making bedtime stories up. She used to do it when me and my sister were growing up. The stories were great! I still remember them now. Now, she has grandchildren, she also does it for them. When I asked what skills Nanny has, they all said her bedtime stories. That skill... is just beautiful to me.

Describe a time when your mum inspired one of your projects?

My mum inspired me on a project a long time ago when I was in school. I made a small coffee table. My mum's inspiration in that was just – her ideas, her support was absolutely amazing on that project. That’s why I kept it and still keep it and it – I love it because of the inspiration that my mum gave to me from that.

if you could collaborate with your mum on a project, what would it be?

If I had to collaborate with my mum on a project it would be absolutely anything. Absolutely anything. As long as my mum was by my side working with me, that would be a dream for me. Spending time with my mum is so important to me. So, so important. So her just being there, making tea, talking to me; anything would bring me so much joy.

How has your mum influenced your trade journey?

My mum [has] influenced my trade journey massively. She's always been there to support me in whatever I do. Even when I was at college – and I suffer with dyslexia – my mum was behind me, helping me all the way through it and everything like that.

What would you like to say to your mum in honour of Mother's Day?

I just want to wish my mum, my wife and any guardian out there that gives all the love and support that the two most important women and mothers in my life give myself and my children. Happy Mother’s Day.

Yasmin

You'll remember Yasmin from our International Women's Day blog – a Yorkshire-based Tig Welder for Ginetta Cars. Well, this time she's teaming up with us to celebrate another talented lady in her life (aside from herself, of course): her mum!

The welding professional answers our questions on exactly what her mother's talent is and how she inspired her to join the trades:

What is the most interesting skill or hobby your mum has?

My mum is so crafty. My mum's hobby actually is crocheting. She did a little bit of knitting and sewing when she was younger – stopped it for quite a few years – obviously, work; you come back home, you just want to chill out. Well, she started doing it a few years back and she absolutely loves it! She sits on her sofa watching the TV crocheting away. I absolutely love it. I've got blankets upon blankets; I got a little... a little dragon that I absolutely love that she made for me. So, when it comes to her making stuff, she just goes for it and she does it every time so well.

Describe a time when your mum inspired one of your projects?

A little while ago when I actually started making stock, I started off by making a rabbit which was inspired by a pet that my mum and dad had got me. Now, she'd really into birds and birdwatching; she's really pushed me kind of into that and I love it too. I actually not long ago at Ginetta made an owl that was actually inspired by my mum.

How has your mum influenced your trade journey?

My mum was actually the one that pushed me once I decided that I couldn’t do school anymore. She was the one that pushed me towards – ‘Right, just go with what you feel; whatever you want to do we can get behind it and we will find a way’. And as soon as I was keen on the fact of doing engineering, my mum was straight in, she was like, ‘Right, we’ll find an apprenticeship, we’ll find you somewhere at college' and she was straight in to help me in every way she could.

What would you like to say to your mum in honour of Mother's Day?

Thank you for everything you’ve done! All the support, all the times I’ve been crying, being like, 'don’t wanna do this’, ‘can’t do this’ and you’ve been turning around going, ‘No you can. Get up, let’s get this!' So, mum, if you see this, I love ya. Thank you.
